Flavorful Turmeric-Spiced Braised Cabbage is the perfect AIP side. Pair it with Turmeric Chicken & cauli rice for an Indian-inspired feast!
Before I began my AIP journey (and before I was diagnosed with Celiac and Hashimoto’s), Indian food was hands-down my favorite take-out. All the rich, bold flavors, warming spices and yummy sauces – mmm! Perfection!
Unfortunately for me, almost any Indian dish available at a restaurant contains seed spices, dairy, grains and/or nightshades – all of which are eliminated on AIP. But fortunately for you, I love a challenge! So I set out to create zesty, flavorful, Indian-inspired dishes that are AIP-friendly and still compete head-to-head with the delicious flavors from your favorite Indian take-out.
Last week, I shared this Effortless Instant Pot Turmeric Chicken. If you haven’t tried it yet, stop what you’re doing immediately and go make it, and then come back.
I’ll wait….
…Back? Great!
Anyway, a few weeks ago, one of my favorite local Indian restaurants posted a picture on Instagram of a new recipe they were developing: Turmeric-Spiced Braised Cabbage. Without even knowing what the ingredients were, I knew I had to create my own AIP version.
So, without further ado, I present to you: Warming Turmeric-Spiced Braised Cabbage (the AIP version)!
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp avocado oil
- 1/2 medium head green cabbage, shredded (about 4 cups)
- 2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 cup bone broth or water
- squeeze of lime juice
How to make this Warming Turmeric-Spiced Braised Cabbage
This recipe is almost as easy as Effortless Instant Pot Turmeric Chicken, but with a tiny bit more hands-on time. In fact, you should start the Turmeric Chicken in the Instant Pot and then start on this delicious side dish while it cooks. Then warm up some cauli rice and dinner is ready!
So, to start, you’re going to want to core and shred your cabbage. You can use a box grater, a food processor, or just slice it thinly with a sharp knife (which is what I did). Or, if you’re extra tight on time (or too exhausted to even think about cutting vegetables), just buy some pre-shredded cabbage. I won’t judge.
Then, in a large skillet with high sides, warm the avocado oil over med-high heat, until glistening (but not smoking). Add the shredded cabbage and sauté until just beginning to wilt, about 2 minutes.
Add all the spices and broth, stirring to combine. Cover and reduce heat to a low simmer.
Simmer until cabbage is tender (about 7-10 minutes). Add a squeeze of fresh lime juice and serve!
